Saturday night the Silicon Valley Roller Girls’ Dot.Kamikazes triumphed in a close battle with the Sac City Rollers, defeating the visiting team by a narrow margin, 97-84.

It was a successful night for SVRG’s jammers, with several jams exceeding 7-point gains for the Dot.Kamikazes. While Sac City relied on a relatively steady rotation of the tough-as-nails Purdy Grrrl, an agile La Lucha, and the superspeedy Lil’ Punk, SVRG had a deep bench of jammers. Smack Dahlia, Terribelle Demise, Smashleigh, and BootyVicious completed the majority of jams, with Pia Mess and Lizapalooza also toeing the line for a couple.
The game was neck and neck the entire night, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats as Sac City, then SVRG, then Sac, then SVRG would take the lead. Coaches Pandamonium and Left Turn Only continuously adapted their strategies to maximize the team’s scoring potential while reining in Sac City’s productive jammers. At half time, Sac had inched ahead of the Dot.Kamikazes, 57-54.

After halftime, SVRG came back to the floor hyped up and ready to roll. In the second half, the depth of the jammer bench proved to be a great benefit to the Dot.Kamikazes. While Sac City’s jammers were showing noticeable wear, SVRG was able to save their jammers’ energy by cycling through the bench–a strategic advantage considering the relentlessness of both teams’ blockers.

Indeed, with such a smashing defense at work, team physician Dr. Tony Kearns made a few appearances on the track, checking in after Lindsay Lohanded had a nasty fall and Smashleigh took a particularly hard hit from Purdy Grrrl during a close jam. UPDATE: although Smashleigh survived with a bruise, Lohanded sustained a serious knee injury and is currently off skates.

Both teams put up a formidable defense, and several girls were delivering killer hits. MisTits, Rot Wheels, and Pia Mess took Sac City skaters to the floor several times, whereas Sac City’s D-Struct-O, Purdy Grrrl, and Spankenstein returned the favor. Rot Wheels and MisTits seemed to be carrying on telepathic communication on the track as their blocking integrated seamlessly. Lip$tick Bandita seemed to attach herself to the front of her opponents, successfully containing Sac City’s jammers for laps at a time. SVRG’s defensive efforts kept Sac City’s jammers from putting up big numbers, and slowly SVRG was able to accumulate points and creep ahead of Sac in the last eight minutes of the bout.
In this tight bout, victory was not certain until the last jam. In the end, however, SVRG had the endurance and strategy necessary to beat out Sac City.
SVRG would like to thank the Sac City Rollers for coming out to play in San Jose! We would also like to extend our gratitude to our amazing zebra crew and the visiting refs who helped assist at the bout; our announcers, CCRD’s Coach Kahuna, SVRG’s own Sadie Mae Gutz, and the divine Miss Julie; our photographers, Boss Hogg, Jim Cottingham, and CCRD’s Smuckers; the staff at LIVE 105; our friends at Psycho Donuts; the employees of San Jose Skate; and all of our volunteers, fans, and supporters for a great first home bout!
