Let Them Eat Cake at the Skater 26 Premier

By day, SVRG’s very own Skater Tots is a specialty cake artist and owner of A Spoonful of Sugar. She created this delicious and delectable treat for the premier of “Skater 26” at the San Francisco IndieFest on February 10th at the Roxie Theater.

Skater 26 cake created by A Spoonful of Sugar

The documentary follows the day-in and day-out life of a B.ay A.rea D.erby Girl (B.A.D. All-Star Chantilly Mace #26). Watch the trailer by 13th Generation Productions, produced by Steve Romanko and directed by Turner Van Ryn.

The film emphasizes the enormous time commitment involved in participating in a legitimate sport like roller derby. As Tots notes, “derby isn’t just something you do by night to let out your alter ego.”

Remarkably, just four days before the premier, Tots had surgery to reset her ankle which had been broken in three places from a derby injury. With the help of derby friends (Teddy Wreck-Spin, Bitch Puddin’, Nur, Destyn, and Elizabeth), she created this edible masterpiece—a testimony to her dedication and love of the sport.

While Tots prepares for her comeback, she’s dreaming up even more cakes. When asked what flavor cake SVRG would be, she replied, “My teammates like any flavor of cake!”

Featured Charity: Career Closet

Career Closet is our featured charity and will be accepting donations at our April 2nd bout! If you have clothing, accessories, or handbags that you would like to donate, please bring them with you and drop them off at their booth! You can also stop by to learn more about Career Closet’s programs and locations. A portion of the proceeds from the bout will also go to Career Closet!

Career Closet is a nonprofit organization that lends a hand to women wanting to get back into the work force. Whatever challenges they face—poverty, being a single mother, or lacking experience—Career Closet helps set them on their way to landing a job they can be proud of. The first step to a good career is confidence, and yes, it may sound silly but appropriate work attire is part of that confidence. Women come to Career Closet for personal consultations and access to affordable clothing to create the perfect working wardrobe.

In April and June, SVRG will be volunteering at several Career Closet events. You will find SVRG skaters working the April 9th Closet Sale, assisting shoppers in finding the perfect fits. SVRG will also be participating in wardrobe consultations, helping women find styles that are both professional and fashionable. Everyone knows a roller girl has impeccable taste!

Here’s how you can help:

1) Cash donations are always welcome. Cash can be used to purchase clothing and expand the program operations, allowing Career Closet to serve more women.
2) Do you have some gently-used clothing that just doesn’t fit anymore? Donate it! Items that are new or lightly used are always appreciated.
3) Volunteer! Every women likes to hear the words, “You look fabulous!” Spend an evening helping clients pick out clothing, and encouraging them to feel confident about themselves. It’s amazing what a new outfit and a little encouragement can do for someone.

For more info on Career Closet or to get involved visit their website.

Happy Holiday Helpers: Goose, Diggler and Smash

Happy Holiday Helpers: Goose, Diggler, and Smash

The Silicon Valley Roller Girls spent a very special Thanksgiving with West Valley Community Services at Bowlmor Lanes in Cupertino, ensuring that many area low-income families had a day worthy of being thankful for.

Satan’s Kitten, Stevie Knickers, and Absolutely Scabulous served a beautiful Thanksgiving lunch (on roller skates of course!) alongside other Silicon Valley notables, including United Way CEO Carole Leigh Hutton, Assemblyman Paul Fong, Cupertino Mayor Kris Wang and Saratoga Councilwoman Jill Hunter.

Smash N’ Burn, Mongoose, Latin Crippler, Lindsay Lohanded, Catherine Beata Bones, and Cannonball Iztik worked the food line and refilled drinks, while Donna Diggler cheered families on at the bowling lanes, and Postal Servix and Beth Sentence handed out SVRG giveaways to children.

The girls were welcomed with open arms and were provided a bowling pin to sign, which will be displayed in Bowlmor’s special case alongside pins from Jason Biggs and other celebrities. They also hosted a ‘Plank-Off Against a Derby Girl’ exercise challenge against Skooter Ov’r where children vied for a chance to take home one of four frozen turkey dinners for their families!

The Silicon Valley Roller Girls make for awesome guides

I didn’t want to use the term “escort” in the title and give anyone the wrong impression. This weekend a crew of our Hard Drivers helped guide chefs who were participating in the NACUFS National Conference through the downtown area. Raci Nikkers, Latin Crippler, Krashonista, Kat von Meow, Avida Sane, and Stevie Nickers helped the league raise some much needed funds, and apparently had some fun while doing it. Thank you, ladies!

SVRG enjoys a night out with the San Jose Wolves

Puddin', Kitten, the San Jose Wolf, Dollface, and Babydoll were out to cheer on the Wolves.

Thanks to our new friend Ray, some of SVRG’s skaters and affiliates enjoyed a night out watching our local arena football team, the San Jose Wolves, this past Saturday. Those in attendance said it was a fun and interesting night, and we are very grateful to Ray for the opportunity to take in a game. Hey San Jose, there are more sports than just the Sharks to keep you entertained! 🙂

SVRG rollin’ around the South Bay

Steffin' Razor, Absolutely Scabulous, Smack Dahlia, Vegas Vixen, Saucy Monstrosity, Belle Wringer, and Lizapalooza with their pets.

The Silicon Valley Roller Girls were out and about this weekend. On Saturday morning, several skaters and their assortment of dogs made an appearance in the Los Altos Pet Parade. Lizapalooza and Absolutely Scabulous brought their respective Chloes; Steffin’ Razor, Vegas Vixen, and Smack Dahlia had their bulldogs (Betty, Miller, and Knuckles, respectively); Belle brought beautiful white wolflike Gir; Saucy Monstrosity brought her pint-sized chihuahua, Mugsy; and Retox Fox, being petless among the bunch, toted the banner. Thanks to the Los Altos Town Crier for mentioning us in their writeup.

Later on in the day, Ab Scab and Fox joined up with Bitch Puddin’, Zootown Throwdown, Bozo Disposo, and Cosmo Trouble (the former MisTits) to perform some demos and chat with the crowd at Via Velo, a festival in downtown San Jose celebrating biking and alternative forms of transportation. It’s always great to meet new people and spread the derby love. We were particularly excited to start promoting our junior derby camp this summer. Thanks to all the great people we talked to, and a special thanks to Tricia for the opportunity to talk some derby from the stages.

Dude, it's a firetruck...THAT'S A SHARK!

We’re looking forward to another busy week. We will be helping out at the Sakomoto Elementary open house, then skating at their fundraiser on Wednesday, and then we will be in attendance at the San Jose Wolves arena football game on Saturday.

Cleaning out your closet? Sacred Heart needs your help!

Here is a message from our new Head of Community Service, Satan’s Kitten. Sacred Heart Community Service is one of the Silicon Valley Roller Girls’ community partners. We donated the proceeds from our last bout to them, and recently several of our girls worked as helpers and elves during their holiday toy drive and distribution. From Kitten:

I visited with Sacred Heart on Friday and they could really use some donations. Although there is a flood of giving around the holidays, things tend to slow down at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, need knows no season, and assistance is of particular importance during the winter months.  The center is in particular need of clothing and toiletries. C’mon, you know you resolved to clean out your closets and cabinets this year, and this is the perfect opportunity to see those items go to those who need them. Here is what they need. Every item helps!

– New and used clothing/shoes of all kinds
– New and gently used blankets, sleeping bags, and warm coats and jackets
– Socks and underwear of all sizes
– Baby diapers, body soap, toilet paper
– Travel toiletries for our hygiene kits (e.g., the ones you collect at hotels but never remember to use)
– Baby formula (pref. Enfamil with Iron)
– Pens

Donations need to be be dropped off Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM, and Saturdays, 9AM to 12PM, at 1381 South First Street in downtown San Jose. There are two sets of large double doors at the back of the building marked “Donations.”

However, if you have goods to donate but can’t make it to those hours, we can arrange for you to drop off items at San Jose Skate during our practice the night of Sunday, January 17. If you would like to make arrangements to drop items off at this time, please contact Kitten at community@svrollergirls.com .

On a related note, if you’ve got a green thumb (or just elbow grease to spare), Sacred Heart is also looking for community volunteers to help build raised-bed gardens on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 18. The shift is from 9 to 2. Some of SVRG will be out there helping–if you would like to join us, email volunteers@sacredheartcs.org .

On behalf of Sacred Heart and the people they serve, thank you!

SVRG loves a parade!

Some of our dedicated skaters made an appearance at the Willow Glen Founder’s Day Parade in San Jose this past Saturday before our bout against OC. Thanks to Steffen Razor for the on-site reporting!

SVRG @ Willow Glen Founder’s Day Parade

Writeup by Steffen Razor

This was the first parade to skate in for many of us, so we were very excited and ready to do some skating! Our roster for the parade consisted of Texas ChanaSaw Massacre, Private Choker, Belle Wringer, Steffen Razor and our ground crew/promotional coordinator Kimfectious. The Dot.Kamikazes had a bout the same evening, plus we have been promoting for the movie Whip It, so this was a prime opportunity for us to do some flyering.

Although there were 40+ entries in the parade and there was a large turnout of participants, we were charmed to see that the parade lasted three blocks, and that it had a very “hometown” feel to it. The crowd was pretty rowdy (for a parade) as we skated down the street. They were asking us to do tricks and cheering when we did some fancy backwards whips we had been practicing a few nights before. They also liked our regular whips and the skilled display of hip checks by Razor, Belle and ChanaSaw. Obviously SVRG is well known in the area, because we heard requests for Lipstik Bandita and other skaters, as well as cheers from some fans who know us already. One parade-goer seemed skeptical of our league’s success, so Razor skated over to explain our record for the year, that both our A and B teams had only lost one game each. Upon being challenged with “Well, have you played Santa Cruz?” Razor was pleased to answer that we had played both their A and B teams and had been victorious both times.

After the parade was over, we did a little meet ‘n greet with the crowd, and handed out some goodies: sweatbands, wristbands, buttons, trading cards and posters from Whip It.

SVRG was around town in other fashions this weekend as well. Below are some pics from an appearance some of our girls did to promote the Whip It soundtrack at Streetlight Records.

We hope to see some more fans out at our next public appearance, during the premiere of Whip It at Camera 7 Pruneyard and Camera 12 Downtown Theaters this Friday!
